Block01 Part02 & 03 ~ Gradients

The above photo is of the first sheet of gradients that I painted. We did two of these for lessons 02 and 03. Gradients are an important part of oil painting and making the transition smoothly between colors to show form shadows is a critical skill in oil painting.

In these two lessons the students learned how to created buffers used between two colors and then how to turn those into gradients. We also learned how to create the new colors that made up the gradient colors used.

This was more difficult than I imagined. Getting the gradients with oil paint was a challenging exercise. There are several that I feel could have been better, but overall, I can see that the more I did, the better they were.

This is the second sheet of gradients that was required before I could move on to painting from a photo. I don't know why gradients are so hard for me, but I do see why we practice them on two sheets before moving on.

In the second part of gradients I did paint some black at the edge of gradients so that I could see them a bit better and in context.
