Block01 Part04 ~ First Painting

This was my first painting with oils. In our first supply box from Evolve, we are sent a set of four tubes of gray scale colors. They include two (2) for shadows which are Extreme Shadow and Moderate Shadow, and two (2) lights including Extreme Light and Moderate Light. We use these for all of our paintings in Block01. It is exclusively gray scale paintings from a set of black and white photos that are also included in the box.

There are several goals for this first painting that we are expected to accomplish.

1. We learn how to transfer the photo image to the canvas using transfer sheets. It is a great way to attach the transfer sheet and photo in such a way that is also used when we are creating stretched canvas, so the skill is transferable.

2. We learn how to distinguish between Shadow (Extreme or Moderate) and Light (Extreme or Moderate) and marking these on our transfer sheet. The picture below shows an example from a future sheet that shows the process of assigning value to the photo.

3. We are also expected to do our best work to make the edges smooth and the transitions sharp.

In the photo or my painting of the blocks at the top of the page, I realized that there are some white spots showing, but I think it is from the ridges of paint that I have issues with. I do look at the painting through a magnifying light (old eyes) and didn't see white canvas when I did that. I will be working on getting the ridges down as well as working on gradients.
